how to use common modules in different projects
alonsadan , 08-28-2018, 06:44 AM
hello,
my name is alon sadan.
I am working for a company that sales embedded baseboards and other solutions.
each client has modifications or needs to add features to the board.
is there a way that i could take a module or a component from other designs and insert it into my design?
example:
I have the card named X and that card has a 100/10 port but the customer needs a GBE port.
on another design named Y i have a GBE port.
by module, i mean the IC itself and the resistor capacitors etc and the wires polygons.
is there a quick way to copy the module SCH and layout from project Y in to X ?
and is there a way to clean the board from wire and polygons automatically when i remove the 100/10 port SCH page from the project?
best regards,
alon sadan

Hello @alonsadan ,
You are looking for the "Snippets" feature in Altium.
This page details the Snippets panel, which provides the ability to save and reuse sections of design circuitry or code. Great for those often-used fragments and smaller sections of circuitry that you want to reuse without starting from scratch each time
The above link describes how this feature can be used.
P.S.
I am sure if you are using some other CAD tool it must have a similar feature.
Thank you.

@alonsadan I simply copy the pages or circuits which I would like to re-use from other projects and paste them into my new project.
PS: Once I tried to create blocks in hierachical design (e.g. I created a block with 1Gb Ethernet which could be re-used), but that didn't work out the way as I was expecting (it didn't really saved much time, actually it made the design even more complex).

Hi @chitransh92
I am using altium.
I have looked at snnipets and it looks very good.
I will try to use it in my project.
Thank you
@robertferanec when you say copy you mean the schematics right?
What is your opinion on snippets? Did you found it helpful?
If not can you please ellaborate what is the reason please.
Thank you very much!
Best regards,
Alon Sadan

- yes, I copy schematic, sometimes I also copy PCB (for PCB you may want to keep reference designators same between old schematic and new schematic)
- I had a look at snippets once, but never really needed them
