Heat dissipation of Voltage regulators

SkyDvv , 10-19-2024, 06:03 PM
Hey there, I have a question, I will be usuing this one for 200mA, from 12V to 5V which means 1.4W, is it okay, I don't see the Thermal resistance junction-PCB, it's only found in TI, will the heat dissiption will be 140C increase?

I found SSP1117-5V are those numbers are valid?

it's not written case or ambient

These information is not complete unfortunately. You need the PCB condition, like no of layers , footprints for SOT223. And for TO packages things little different

The thermal resistance from junction to case is as it state to the case. Same for the SSP1117-5V, junction to case (within package).
An indication on temperature rise is the junction to ambient, which is 100°C for DPAK. With 1.4W that means 140°C increase. Given you have the same surrounding conditions (for instance 25x25mm copper of 2oz)

For a correct calculation/estimation you need to take all other thermal resistances into consideration. Do note that the manufacturer cannot specify this, as it is your design. They just give their package value.
