Errors when updating an PCB

Jenan , 04-20-2026, 11:25 AM
I’m editing a PCB, specifically, I’m replacing 2 identical drivers and their supporting components with a new one, I have updated the schematic, validated it with no errors. During the process of updating the PCB, I got few errors while running the ECO.
I’m not sure why, I did my research but it is said that I didn’t delete the old components but I did in the schematic. Some recommended deleting them from the layout but that resulted more errors and it’s a manual process. Please help me out!

delete that footprint and try again

Thank you for responding, is this a common case? I’m still a beginner but I assumed Altium should be updating the footprints from the new schematic, I’m wondering what might be the cause

Hi, an update!

I deleted the old footprints and updated the PCB, but I got more errors of unknown pins 🙁

Cannot match pads is caused by a different number of pads in the old footprint compared to the new footprint.
Due to a bug, Altium does not replace the footprint. The only solution is to delete the footprint from the PCB and let Altium add the new one.
As for the missing pins - show the footprint and the error message.
**No photos** use screen capture tools like the standard "snipping" tool from windows.

some time ago I made this video, it may help: https://youtu.be/f7GP6NZs0Ok

Thank you for sharing Robert! Unfortunately it’s not a problem in the components itself, I did check and it’s all right, and for some reason, the unknown pin error occurred to a component that has a duplicate somewhere else on the board, the duplicate has no errors! 🤔

Thank you for responding! Please find an attached snippet of the errors. As for the footprints, to prevent “cannot match pad” error I deleted the old chip and its supporting components.

Now that I got more errors while running ECO there were no changes nor updates made on the board. So the components you see in the new error messages are not executed yet.

Please note that most of these are from the new components but not all of them are new! Some share the same net as the new components, but some don’t!

Hello, here’s an update

I tried renaming one component to a non-existing name (e.g.: C800), and I noticed it didn’t produce an error. So I rested all nets and updated the PCB again and it worked! 😃
